Rooglewood Countdown: 25 days: 5 Tag Lines

If you read the back of the Five Glass Slippers collection, you will find this intriguing collection of tag lines:

"What happens when Cinderella is so painfully shy that she cannot bear the idea of attending the royal ball?
Or when the slipper fits...but on the wrong girl?
What happens when Cinderella is determined to oust an imposter prince from her rightful throne?
Or when she's a cendrillon miner working from a space station orbiting a cthonian planet?
What happens when Cinderella, a humble housemaid, is sent with a message for a prisoner trapped in a frightening fairy circus?"
I don't know about you, but that paragraph of five tag lines were incredibly captivating.  I couldn't WAIT to read those stories.

So here is a fun game for you.  Think about the Snow White collection of 5 winners.  Imagine yours is one of them.  What question could you pose to make people want to read your story?

Then, think about 4 other ideas that sound cool.  Put them all together, with yours included.  Tickle my mind with the ideas of what a collection compiled by you (with one story being yours) would sound like.

If you didn't write a Snow White story, then make up 5 tag lines anyway.  I can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!  :D  :D  :D

  1. What happens when a galactic renegade is charged to find and kill a planet's rogue princess...or else?
Or when a queen is in a race against time to save her step-daughter from six evil dwarves?
What happens when an up-and-coming singer defies her narcissistic agent and releases a song that can make or break her?
What happens when 7 cowboys ride into town to set a land baron straight?
Or when an all-seeing mirror takes the problems of the kingdom into her own hands?

    1. (The second line is the real one. The other four are ones I made up on the spot.)

    2. Ooooh, I really like that second one! Fairytales that flip the good/evil roles are so interesting. I also like the idea of a sentient, all-seeing mirror!

Okay, let me try my hand at this...

What happens when a mirror meant to reflect beauty reveals one's darkest fears instead?
Or when an obedient huntsman kills the princess and incurs the wrath of an entire army of dwarves?
What happens when Snow White wakes up in a lab full of other young women suspended in glass cases?
Or when a girl's seven imaginary friends are the only ones standing between her and her foster mother's schemes?
What happens when the prince refuses wake the sleeping maiden, and the keeper of the orchards must race to undo the apple's poison?

(The first was my real one. The rest were made up on the spot too!)

    3. These are all so good! I would read them all.

    4. I second what Skye said -- I would read them all. Those are SUCH good ideas, Tracey!!!

    5. That was intended for both of you, all of ideas are great!

  2. A Geisha wants to leave her confined life, with the help of a Samurai she plans to fake her death.

A girl accidentally befriends the human embodiment of the seven sins, chaos ensues.

A circus clown finds her world shatter, when she discovers the existent of fae.

Th Queen had good reason to kill her stepdaughter, her bloodlust is putting the entire kingdom at risk.

    The third one is mine.

    1. Oooh, I would read all of yours, too! I like the idea that Snow White is the one who set up the "assassination" of herself -- that's cool. I could see that backfiring, too, and creating a whole story-full of tangles.
Seven sins in one human form sounds pretty chaotic, for sure. I wonder how the girl will get out of that one.
I love number 3 because I know that story!!!
Mmmm...a bad Snow White...I'd be curious to read those characters!!!

    2. Of course I already loved your real story, Skye, but I have to say those other ideas sound awesome too! I'd love to read about Snow faking her own death. Great twist!

    3. Thanks Esther, that was one of my first ideas for the contest. I might still write it.
The other ones beside mine, I just brainstormed. So glad you liked mine.

Thanks Tracey! I still want to do that one.

  3. I know I'm late, but...

"What happens when a Gondorian prince sets out for the Lonely Mountain... and the Elven princess enchanted inside it?"
"Or when two Snow Whites, in parallel dimensions, are the only ones who know something is wrong with the story?"
"What happens when a space princess’ messages for help, sent through her dreams, reach the first Intergalactic Knight?"
"Or when a Renaissance princess awakens in the modern day... and the queen who enchanted her is still alive?"
"What happens when a time traveller, with the help of seven clock lords, races to find a princess lost in time?"

Try to guess which one is the real one. ;)

    1. Grace, I would love to read all of these!!! Wow, they sound so good!
I saw your comment on a later post so I know which one is yours now. But I have to say I probably would have guessed the parallel dimensions if I didn't know the real answer. I love the one that is your real story though!!!

    2. Aw, thanks so much! :)
Funnily enough, the only one that I had to make up was the last one (I had a bit of idea overload for the contest, you see). I may still write some of those someday, though. Who knows?

Goodbye and God Be With You

It's rather fitting that some things come to a close on this day -- the last day of the year. I submitted my last entry into the Rooglewood contest this morning.  I can hardly believe it took me until the day of the deadline to send it in because I'm usually earlier than that.  And, even with the extra time I took, I still felt a little bit like maybe I could have done better if I had more time. But there was no feeling of regret when I hit "send."  Mostly it was just a prayer that Rooglewood would hear the heart of the message when they read it and that maybe, if I win, they could help me bring the full potential out of my little story.  And there was also a feeling, after working on these stories for more than six months, that it felt good to close that chapter and move on to the next one. I did it.  I wrote them.  And I'm really proud of them. Last year, the act of hitting "send" on my contest entry catapulted me into an anticipatory state....

The Countdown: Eight Days

Eight days.  Do you know what that means?  Barely over a week.  Tomorrow will be one week from the announcement date. Are you excited? I am. So, today, I want to talk to those who wrote something for the contest, whether or not you entered it in the end. What made you start writing your story?  What was the first inkling of an idea that tickled your brain?  What was it that you liked about your premise?  As you wrote, did you have a favorite character or a favorite scene?  And are you glad you wrote it down?  Do you feel like you learned and grew in your ability as a writer as you tried out things for this contest? And, if your story isn't included in this year's Rooglewood anthology (either because you didn't submit it or because it didn't fit with the other four stories selected), what will you do with it?  Will you market it elsewhere?  Or will you lock it away in a drawer?

Rooglewood Countdown: 12 days

For the next 12 1/2 days, as we do our final countdown until March 31st, I'm going to do 4 posts asking about something you would like to see in the Snow White collection.      There are so many ways all of us, writers and readers alike, can win in this contest.  Maybe a familiar name makes it into the final five -- hurray!  Maybe a story in your favorite genre ended up in the collection this year -- woohoo!  Maybe you finally get to read a winning story about an evil king and his Snow White son -- how awesome!      So, in celebration of all the many things we can root for, I want to know some of the things that you think would be cool to find in this year's set of winners.      Without further ado, here is my question for the day: What is a point of view you would like to see in this collection?  Would you like a story written from the prince's perspective?  A story from Snow White's p...
