I skipped Sunday, but I'm still thinking about Snow White themes. And I'm curious what you guys have to say about them.
Snow White has the potential to hold some pretty powerful themes. We've talked about:
- There is the ideology of beauty and what defines it.
- There are opportunities to explore jealousy, pain, betrayal, grasps for control, and the way people react to trauma in their lives.
- There are reflections of truth and honesty, if you explore the role of the mirror.
Today I want to talk about kindness, mercy, and forgiveness. How do you see these things in the dwarves? In Snow White? What does it mean to be kind? Or have mercy? Is forgiveness a good thing? What's the difference between forgiveness and just being gullible?
Loved the questions you put in this post, Esther - they really got me thinking. (also, congrats on being one of the finalists for the Speculative Faith writing challenge!)

Hi, Savannah! It wasn't until I got involved in writing this retelling that I realized just how much potential for deep thinking there was in this story.
ReplyDeleteAnd one of the fascinating things about writing is that sometimes you share truths about how you see the world without even thinking about it. Your own worldview is shared through your pen. It's neat to look back and think about why you wrote what you did.
I don't know that I made my dwarves kind, but they were compassionate especially to Snow, and she in turn was kind to others.
ReplyDeleteYou really get me thinking about this story, it's great!
My dwarves definitely weren't kind, lol.
DeleteMy Snow White may have been a little gullible at first, but in the end her kindness and forgiveness were her strengths. She opened the door to strangers, not only out of her compassion for others, but also because of who she wanted to be.
Nope, they were straight up evil.
DeleteI found her to be a breath of fresh air. She was so sweet!
Hehe, Skye. Yep.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay, I'm so glad you like my girl.
