One Lovely Blog Award - from Clara

http://stlseeds.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-one-lovely-blog-award.html

Clara Stone, from The Golden Dusk, nominated me for the "One Lovely Blog Award."  Therefore, I shall follow two of these three rules:
Rule 1) Link back to the blogger who nominated you (that's Clara, of course)
Rule 2) Post seven facts about yourself
Rule 3) Nominate 15 other bloggers to participate
The last rule, I'm going to modify a little bit because I'm not sure I can come up with 15 names on the spot.

      Now for the seven facts:

1. I can scratch out a simple tune on almost any woodwind, string, or percussion instrument.  Brass instruments are still rather hit or miss for me.  And I am not terribly skilled at any one instrument because I don't consistently practice.  :/

2. I can't really read sheet music.  My reading level is like first grade: c-c-c-c--a-a-a-a-a--t-t-t-t...c-c-c--a-a-a--t-t-t...c-c--a-a--t-t...c-a-t...cat!  r-r-r-r-r--a-a-a-a-a--n-n-n-n-n-n...  I am well-versed in music theory and I can transpose a chord sheet in my head while playing a song without skipping a beat.  But sheet music is not something I've been trained to.  Someday maybe...

3. I like fall colors (dark greens, browns, mahogany, rust, oranges, deep reds, etc) and spring colors (pinks, green, purple, blue, rose red, etc) best, although I occasionally wear black to look cool like my brother.

4.  I've been hiking in the mountains twice this year.

5. I have 2 dogs who are my constant companions when I'm home.

6. I don't drink coffee.  I rarely drink tea.  I like water.  Or water with a tiny bit of juice in it.

7. So far, I have seen the Atlantic Ocean, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

How about you?  I nominate the following to tell me about themselves (and you are welcome to leave a link to your response in my comments below): Chloe Linn, Olivia Fisher, Erudessa, Jessica, Emileigh, Jack, Jessy, Kathryn, Kiri, Anna, Ana, and anyone else who thinks this looks fun.

  1. It's funny because I read sheet music, and I wish I could play by ear. :D

    1. Wow! Can you sit down and play a song you have never heard before by reading the sheet?

  2. Thanks for tagging me! I'll see if I can get to answering it. :)

So you learned music theory without playing a particular instrument? I'm working through fourth grade music theory at the moment - writing tunes, and cadences, and that fun stuff. :)

  3. Wow! Music theory...it always sounds so intimidating to me. I learned how to read music, but then discovered that I had so many more options if I played by ear. Though I'm a rather slow and cautious player by ear. ;)

More Snippets from Snow White Rose Red

One of the shadows moved.   “Were you just going to chuck it in there with no thought for the poor folks on the other side?”   Flip’s voice drawled out.   It was a deep voice and it made my heart skip a beat.      He moved away from the trees and came to stand in front of me.   “Some hard-working fellow is plowing his field and then – whop!   Out of nowhere, a poisoned apple flies out and hits him upside the head.”   He clucked his tongue reproachfully.

A Short Story Break

via Pinterest     It has been a while since I penned a short story.  Usually it takes something like a "short story contest" to inspire me.  But I have noticed my writing skills improve with each contest so there is something to be said for writing short stories.      I say all this to lead into the fact that I am going to try another short story.  There is no contest looming on the horizon, but it has been so long that I think I am due to write a short piece.  Life cannot be entirely devoted to novel-length plots...      I am rolling around different ideas in my head.  There is no one to give me the first three words or a picture to base my story on.  There are no restrictions, no props, and no judges.      Methinks I will try something that is both epic and ordinary...something I have seen before.  After all, personal experience, great things, and the expression of the ordinary are part of what makes a story.

The Countdown: Eight Days

Eight days.  Do you know what that means?  Barely over a week.  Tomorrow will be one week from the announcement date. Are you excited? I am. So, today, I want to talk to those who wrote something for the contest, whether or not you entered it in the end. What made you start writing your story?  What was the first inkling of an idea that tickled your brain?  What was it that you liked about your premise?  As you wrote, did you have a favorite character or a favorite scene?  And are you glad you wrote it down?  Do you feel like you learned and grew in your ability as a writer as you tried out things for this contest? And, if your story isn't included in this year's Rooglewood anthology (either because you didn't submit it or because it didn't fit with the other four stories selected), what will you do with it?  Will you market it elsewhere?  Or will you lock it away in a drawer?
